Male Hair Loss

Treatments of Male Hair Loss

Hair loss is incredibly common in men and because of this, a large amount of money and resources has been poured into research. Unlike 20 years ago, there are numerous treatment options for male hair loss. Treatments vary, based on the cause of hair loss. Here are the most common treatments for hair loss:

Rogaine: Rogaine is a popular treatment option that uses a topical medication containing Minoxidil. Rogaine works by reversing the shrinking process in hair follicles. This topical treatment is applied twice a day and must be used indefinitely to provide results.

Unfortunately, Rogaine is highly unreliable with only about 50% of users seeing any results whatsoever. If a male has extensive male pattern baldness, Rogaine is not a viable option. There are few side effects caused by using Rogaine. The most common is skin irritations.

Drugs: Drugs like Propecia or Finasteride are available for male pattern baldness. Propecia works by blocking the formation of DHT, which is the most common cause of hair loss. Both drugs are available by prescription only and do contain a slew of side effects. Both drugs also interfere with other medications, which is why it is important to talk to your doctor before taking either of these drugs.

Hair Transplants: Hair transplantation relocates hair follicles from healthy parts of the scalp to bald areas. A person may require several transplantation sessions to successfully mask the bald area. While the transplanted hair may fall out after a week or so, new follicles generally start growing.

Skin irritation is often a side effect of a hair transplant. Undergoing this procedure is also incredibly expensive and often requires numerous sessions, sometimes upwards of 20 sessions. In some cases, the transplanted hair does not successfully grow new hair follicles, which requires another session until new hair starts to grow. Hair transplantations are not covered by insurance.

Natural Supplements: Over the past few years, there have been numerous new natural supplements to appear on the market. These natural supplements do a few things. First and foremost, these supplements block the hormone DHT, which is the primary cause of baldness in men. Second, these supplements also provide the body with essential vitamins and nutrients that the body can use to start to growing healthier, stronger hair follicles.

Natural supplements are much more affordable and actually are just as effective as many other treatment options. Due to this, natural supplements are growing in popularity at an incredible rate.

Depending on your type and severity of hair loss, one of these treatment options should be able to stop your hair loss. Be sure to speak to your doctor before trying one of the drugs mentioned or undergoing hair transplantation. Natural supplements may be the best choice as they are safe, more affordable, and as effective as other options mentioned.
